Goodbye, Bowie.

David Bowie has left planet earth, and the world already seems far less magical without him.
I'm heartbroken, to say the least, at the loss of one of my musical heroes. Even as a millennial, his music resonated with me and without him I don't think I'd ever have become so invested in music. That was the extent of his influence on me.
When I hit adolescence and started feeling disassociated from the world I lived in, 'Changes' was my salvation. It was suddenly ok to be struggling a bit, and it wasn't a bad thing to make a few changes. In fact, Bowie encouraged it. So I dyed my hair bright red, started reading NME religiously, and discovered a love for rock music in a sea of school friends that loved bassline (good old 2k8 ). I was a bit different, yeah, but now I knew that was ok.

So, in line with Lauren Laverne's amazing show this morning (which had me in tears for the most part), I will mourn my hero by celebrating his musical genius. So whilst I grab a drink and settle down to rewatch Labyrinth and The Man Who Fell To Earth, here are a few of my favourite Bowie lyrics.

Thank you for the music, the inspiration & the courage. Goodbye, Starman.

Rock and roll suicide,  The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars.
'Oh no love! you're not alone, You're watching yourself but you're too unfair, You got your head all tangled up but if I could only make you care, Oh no love! you're not alone, No matter what or who you've been, No matter when or where you've seen, All the knives seem to lacerate your brain, I've had my share, I'll help you with the pain, You're not alone.'
Oh! you pretty things, Hunky Dory.
'Look at your children, See their faces in golden rays, Don't kid yourself they belong to you, They're the start of a coming race, The earth is a bitch ,We've finished our news, Homo Sapiens have outgrown their use, All the strangers came today, And it looks as though they're here to stay'.'
Fashion, Scary Monsters (And Super Creeps).
There's a brand new dance but I don't know its name, That people from bad homes  do again and again, It's big and it's bland, full of tension and fear. They do it over there but we don't do it here. Fashion! Turn to the left. Fashion! Turn to the right. Oooh, fashion! We are the goon squad and we're coming to town.
The Width of a Circle, The Man Who Sold The World.
He swallowed his pride and puckered his lips and showed me the leather belt round his hips. My knees were shaking my cheeks aflame, He said "You'll never go down to the Gods again". He struck the ground a cavern appeared and I smelt the burning pit of fear, We crashed a thousand yards belowI said "Do it again, do it again".His nebulous body swayed above. His tongue swollen with devil's love, The snake and I, a venom high, I said "Do it again, do it again".
Changes, Hunky Dory.
I watch the ripples change their size but never leave the stream of warm impermanence and so the days float through my eyes but still the days seem the same. And these children that you spit on as they try to change their worlds, are immune to your consultations -They're quite aware of what they're going through.
Let's Dance, Let's Dance.
If you say run, I'll run with you. If you say hide, we'll hide. Because my love for you would break my heart in two, If you should fall Into my arms and tremble like a flower.
 Lazarus, Blackstar.
Look up here, I’m in heaven, I’ve got scars that can’t be seen. I’ve got drama, can’t be stolen. Everybody knows me now. Look up here, man, I’m in danger, I’ve got nothing left to lose, I’m so high it makes my brain whirl. Dropped my cell phone down below.
